Summit Orthopaedics in Portland, Oregon
Leg fractures and deformities are major problems in developing countries. Many people are unable to afford or even have access to orthopedic care that is easily available in developed nations. Dr. Rich Gellman has devoted a considerable amount of his time and energy to these problems. He works closely with SIGN International Fracture Care (Richland, WA) to teach surgeons from the developing world how to provide better fracture care. These efforts include teaching conferences at SIGN and Africa, as well as operating with surgeons in developing countries.
Summit Orthopaedics also donates used ring external fixators to allow care of patients with complex lower limb deformities and nonunions in countries, where these systems are not available.
We occasionally host surgeons from these areas to help them better understand how to use Ilizarov methods and ring external fixation.
